Heraldry in Practice - From Velum to Vector
Heraldry is both an art and a system — deeply historical, yet ever evolving. With years of experience working within the formal structures of Scottish heraldry, I produce Arms that meet official standards while offering flexibility for modern use. Every commission is crafted with an understanding of both visual composition and heraldic law, ensuring authenticity and distinction.

Hand-Painted Heraldry
My traditional heraldic artwork is created by hand, typically on vellum, using ink and gold leaf. This process results in a richly textured, archival-quality piece — ideal for framing or formal presentation. While labour-intensive, hand-painted Arms hold a unique presence and are often suited to significant commemorations or official displays.

Digital Heraldic Artwork
For greater versatility, I also offer heraldic artwork drawn digitally. This method provides clean, crisp lines that reproduce beautifully in print — from stationery and bookplates to flags, banners, coasters, tableware, and more. Multiple elements (such as badges or crests) can be exported from the full Arms as individual files, allowing for a wide range of practical applications. Digital work is typically more cost-effective and ideal for both personal and commercial use.

Combining Both Approaches
Heraldic artwork can also be created as a hybrid — combining digital and hand-drawn techniques in a single piece. The structural design may be executed digitally for clarity and balance, while details such as shading, gilding, or decorative elements are added by hand. This method offers the best of both worlds: the adaptability and precision of digital work, paired with the texture and character of traditional craftsmanship. It’s especially well suited to clients who need flexibility of use but value the presence of an original, hand-finished artwork.
