Heraldry in Practice - From Velum to Vector
Heraldry is the ancient art and system of designing, granting, and interpreting coats of arms and armorial bearings. Originally developed as a way of identifying individuals, particularly in battle—it has grown into a rich visual language of symbolism, history, and identity. Today, heraldry continues to evolve, blending centuries of tradition with contemporary artistic expression.

Hand-Painted Heraldry
My traditional heraldic work is meticulously hand-painted, on durable vellum using natural pigments. This method reflects the historical roots of heraldry and ensures that each piece is a one-of-a-kind. It is ideal for framed display, archival armourial presentation, or ceremonial use.

Digital Heraldic Artwork
Digital heraldry allows for crisp, clean lines and versatile usage across a variety of formats, including stationery, books, banners, flags, jewellery, and even tableware. These artworks are created with the same care and attention to detail as my traditional pieces, but are optimised for reproduction in both print and digital media. This option is particularly suitable for clients looking for practical applications of their arms.

Combining Both Approaches
Many clients choose to commission both a hand-painted original and a digital version of their heraldic design. This approach offers the best of both worlds: the beauty and presence of traditional craftsmanship, alongside the adaptability of a digital file for modern use. In some cases, elements of both techniques can be combined within a single project.
